Fashion Apocolypse

ION - OMNI, NO. 05, Paper collage, 90 x 60 cm. 2005-2008.

LOOK AT THIS FLURRY OF HAIR. Can you believe this is a collage??  The genius behind this piece, Norwegian artist Are Mokkelbost started his series of paper collages entitled 'Ion', using pieces from mostly fashion and lifestyle magazines to build fully covered canvases as large as 2.2 x 6.0 meters.  His works seem 3-dimensional because he chooses and arranges the bits of paper so that each image has its own color scheme and lighting.  Talk about detailed!  And now I will leave you with his artwork...

First paper collage test, 2001.
Are's early experimentation, creating "flames" of hair.

ION - OMNI, NO. 04, Paper collage, 90 x 60 cm. 2005-2008.

ION - OMNI, NO. 06, Paper collage, 90 x 60 cm. 2005-2008.

ION - OMNI, NO. 10, Paper collage, 90 x 60 cm. 2005-2008.

Ion, Wall, 2002. Paper collage, acrylic spray, foil and stickers on plywood, 2.2 x 6.0 m.

Are's huge masterpiece is(?) exhibited at Oslo's Stenersen Museum.  Detail shots:

As you can see from the next canvas, not all of Are's works flash empty eye sockets and billowy hair...

 ION – 6TH ELEMENT, NO. 01. Paper collage, 59,4 cm x 42 cm. 2006.

But flip this around...

...and you'll find just how complicated it really is.

ION - OMNI, NO. 09, Paper collage, 90 x 60 cm. 2007-2008.

I tried guessing the specifics of the cut-outs in the collage...like that model head illuminated in blue.  Balenciaga SS 2009?  Maybe not...

the eye/nose/mouth cut-out and spray painting (right?) over them is genius. why didn't i think of that?

(because i'm not an artist. lol)
